A button for your thoughts? German crafter Schmitz has used a cornucopia of needlework techniques in crafting buttons as well as closures like monkeys fists (we call them frogs in the U.S.)whether the foundation is from scratch or atop button covers, antique or old buttons, even driftwood. In fact, she includes more than buttons, adding such items as furniture knobs, felt (and other) backings, and roll-ups (think book screws used as drawer pulls). Directions for approximately 40 types of buttons feature illustrations and materials, albeit in a somewhat helter-skelter manner, with upfront chapter lists that dont indicate any specific content. The confusion extends to particular patterns; its difficult to figure outbecause of layout and lack of labelingwhich belongs to what. Nonetheless, its a wonderfully creative approach to a pedestrian aspect of our clothing; her cartoon templates alone are worthy of any needle artist.

I have to say this is a fantastic book! As a crafter, crocheter & knitter I love buttons. I don't know why but I haven't made many buttons in the past but I know I'll be making a lot in the future. Why worry about finding buttons for your next project when you can make them so they'll match exactly and be a unique addition to your project. This book teaches you loads of different techniques to make multiple different designs. The other brilliant thing about this book is with the techniques you learn you can then design your own buttons. As they say the world will be your oyster!

The book is packed full of beautifully descriptive pictures, diagrams and instructions. Everything is clear and easy to understand.
