Sarah-Jane Hicks, author of Amigurumi Christmas, guides you through how to make this super-cute ray or sunshine!

Materials

1 ball of DK (8ply/light worsted) cotton yarn in yellow for sun, 25g/57.5m/63yd
Small amounts of DK (8ply/light worsted) cotton yarn in yellow and orange shades for points (image uses 6 shades)
Small amounts of DK (8ply/light worsted) cotton yarn in peach for cheeks
Black embroidery thread for eyes and mouth (use three strands of six strand thread)
Toy stuffing
Hook: 3.5mm (UK 9/10, US 4)
Size: 11cm (4.5in) from point to point

BLO crochet in back loop only

ch chain

dc double crochet (US sc single crochet)

FLO crochet in front loop only

htr half treble (US hdc half double crochet)

sl st slip stitch

Instructions

Sun (make 2)

Using main colour, 2 ch.

Round 1: 6 dc in second ch from hook (6 sts).

Round 2: 2 dc in each st around (12 sts).

Round 3: (1 dc, 2 dc in next st) six times (18 sts).

Round 4: (2 dc, 2 dc in next st) six times (24 sts).

Round 5: (3 dc, 2 dc in next st) six times (30 sts).

Round 6: (4 dc, 2 dc in next st) six times (36 sts).

Round 7: (5 dc, 2 dc in next st) six times (42 sts).

Round 8: (6 dc, 2 dc in next st) six times (48 sts).

Round 9: 1 dc in each st around.

Fasten off.

Making up

Place panels WS together and sew through both loops of back and BLO of front to join. Stuff before finishing. Weave in ends.

Points

Using one colour for each point, work in chosen order all around edge of sun.

Working in FLO of round 9, join chosen yarn with sl st to any st around edge, * miss 1 st, (2 htr, 1 tr, 2 ch, 1 tr, 2 htr) in next st, miss 1 st, sl st, change colour, rep from * around to end. (12 points)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Finishing

Using black embroidery thread, embroider eyes and mouth. Using pink yarn, embroider cheeks with 2 small sts. Weave in ends. Add a hanging loop and it’s ready.
