Book Description

Learn to draw stunning flora and fauna in easy steps with popular author and teacher Joy-Louise Robinson (@Felicityandink).

Discover 20 delightful projects including flowers, insects, birds and small animals, endorsed by The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Whether you are a beginner looking to learn, or a more experienced artist looking for new ideas and a fresh approach, this stunning book is designed to make drawing simple and enjoyable and will give you results to be proud of. Joy-Louise’s distinctive and much-loved 'bohemian botanical' style of art is inspiring to look at, but made achievable through her carefully structured step drawings and clear instructions. This complete guide to drawing contains:

  • A brief overview of the small amount of equipment required: simply grab paper, pens and a pencil
  • A drawing warm-up section that will encourage you to experiment with mark-making and motion
  • In-depth tips and techniques in each section, from drawing accurate petal edges to creating realistic feathers and fur
  • Simple, easy-to follow steps, with each new step added in a different colour, making it easy to identify which lines to add
  • A suggested colour palette for each project as an optional coloured finish to your line drawings
  • A progression of skill: the projects build in difficulty to develop your skills and confidence as you learn
  • Professional insights into digitizing and then combining your individual drawings into larger pieces of art.

So whether it’s a cheerful daisy, glossy beetle, majestic magpie or snuffling hedgehog, it’s never been easier to create your own beautiful array of flora and fauna.

Association of Botanical Artists

This book contains a very accessible set of 20 nature tutorials allowing the reader to progress through progressively harder challenges. You begin with illustrations of relatively simple plant forms, for example a single snowdrop, and work your way through to more in-depth drawings including insects, moths and even a rabbit.

Joy-Louise works in fine liner ink pen and introduces some useful tips for mark making and shading at the start of the book as well as her knowledge of the types of pens to choose for this style of work. She also offers ideas for watercolour washes to add if you wish to add colour. If you preferred, you could work in pencil to follow the steps of the tutorials.

Every page is set out clearly and I like the fact that there is not a lot of text you are simply invited to follow the steps of her drawing process. I would suggest that this is a good choice for someone who wants to build some basic confidence with drawing from nature, or for a young person who would like these tutorials to follow. I am lucky to work in a school where we have a lovely group of pupils who come into the art room to work on their own projects. One pupil loves to draw flowers for me and so I gave her this book to try. She found the tutorials easy to follow and had presented me with the completed snowdrop by the end of the first lunchbreak!

A book like this may develop confidence when starting to work with fine liner pen and allow you to begin to explore a different, illustrative style of working.

@essjay_florals

I was recently sent this stunning book by the super talented Joy-Louise Robinson and have loved scanning the beautiful tutorials! I decided to give the Snowflake tutorial a shot as I realised I've either never drawn one or it's been way too long that I have no recollection. I've got to say the tutorial was super easy to follow along and super effective!

There are 20 stunning tutorials with beautiful flora and fauna! Next up I'm going to step out of my comfort zone and try one of the adorable fauna tutorials!

A gorgeous book by the very talented artist Joy-Louise Robinson. I have to say, whilst I only intended to read 20 pages per night, I found myself over half way through. I was so engrossed. I have even tried some of the projects as well. The artist is very clear and concise with instructions, and I like how she encourages you to make adaptations with the projects. At the beginning of the book, there is advice on materials, warm-up techniques, various pen techniques you could use. There are gorgeous illustrations all the way through. I like the way she uses green to denote each step. There are colour suggestions and swatches which of course you can deviate from. It is entirely up to you how you personalise each project.
